Cabin Music

A fiddle opens the air with a warm, rich, hum. A mandolin breaks into shimmering waves of sound. A wood flute whistles in front, calling a tune from long ago, and with it, those who the song was written for.

As each measure joins the last and a sound scape is created. Movement, and light emerge in a small cabin tucked away in the country side.
Sprites, Nymphs, and the Far Darrig dance from the notes played from the instruments. Filling the small shelter with magic. Trees grew from the floors and small glens by the wood stove. Soft moss blanket the floor and the beds, making them all the more comfortable. The dancing and feeling of peace was soft and warm like the afternoon sun that peered in through the overgrown kitchen window.

As the song ended, the sprites said their goodbyes with a bow and returned to their own homes. inside the instruments as they are placed aside until tomorrow. When all are rested and the next day comes. the dance will be resumed as if it never ended. The Far Darrig will play his tricks and cause his mischiefe, and the others will play along, and do as they have always done- all through the afternoon sun.

In the Works..

This weeks Illustration Friday word is "frozen" it's proving to be tough thinking of something unique. so in the mean time I've been writing little one page stories. I have a pretty good collection of them. I'm thinking if i want o put them up on here or not, but i'm sheltering myself from the criticism, being that i dont know much about writing, i just like them

Wanna help?

I've decided to start a Zine. It's going to be centered around Art, Books, & Nature. If you live in the Lancaster / Philly/ Harrisburg / Central PA area & want to share a cool trail or bike path, or know of any interesting places you have come across while in the wilds, scrawl it out and send it to me! I'll give you credit for sure. Also feel free to write about any cool books, gallerys, or music you have come across. even samples or your art, illustrations, poems, or short stories-I want all of it in my handmade magazine. I have hopes that it picks up and I can make something of this!

you may not be paid for your entry for now, but i would hope you would have fun with the idea that your ideas and opinion would be out & about.

+In the end, i came out in 1st place, the photo has the other two guys in my division

+the group photo shows everyone who competed that from my school that day & my instructor.

Illustration Friday: Talisman

Illustration Friday: Subtract

+ Another hard word this week, but i thought this was a cool solution, a bit of help from my co-worker on the numerical aspect of the drawing, and my girlfriend thought to make it more of an illustration i should include more drawn elements, so i added the paper, pencil, and eraser dust.
This was truly a collaboration on all fronts, It's nice to have other people help out when your stuck!

Stamp Collection

+ I dont collect stamps, I dont know why they have kitchen ware on them- However, the 2 cent stamp with the fig newtons- Brian Regan has a bit about how the serving size of Fig Newtons is two cookies.

_if you dont know who he is you should educate yourself quickly! haha

Dream Homes

+ A spread from my sketchbook, it started with the man in his bed and i just dreaw what came to mind. I like the houses separating, in a way it makes a comment on all the "broken homes" in the world.

Apple Tree

+ Whats not to like about a bright, clear, summer day with a full shaped, curiously hatched- apple tree?

Illus. friday: Intricate

+ A wasp nest is a perfect example of how nature can prove to be the most intricate force in life. Not only in it's creation of the wasp, but the wasp's creation of its nest. A very great undertaking, crafted with instinct and precision.
+ Another form of Intricacy is that of evolution. Making subtle but distinct differences, in this case, elongating the abdomen of a wasp in order for it to better access the chambers in its nest when laying it's larva.

New website in the works!

+Yes, I've begun laying out my new website, i think this new one will be much cleaner and easy to move around in. I'm also pretty excited about showing a new style of illustration I've been playing with, its much simpler and looks like old childrens book illustrations, but i really enjoy making a simple drawing have character, so it's a go as far as I'm concerned.

+ In the mean time, still check out www.mattchapmanart.com

Illus. Friday: Celebrate

+ Celebrate: True, a funeral is not the first place you think of when you hear the word "celebrate", but i think its fun twist on a not so fun event.

It's just too cold

+ I'm dying to get outside and do some hiking or walking or moss collecting..anything that has to do with being outside. However, as the title of this post states, "It's just too cold". some days its nice enough, but, I'm at work- looking through our giant windows hearing how nice it is outside from people coming and going.

+ I'll get out there soon enough, then all will be right once more-

A Place to Nest

A nest is such a difficult thing to capture, the sticks are arranged in an order, when drawing it, i realized, to make it look "natural" i really had to randomize my hand in the direction it went when drawing the sticks.

Illustration Hallow

Hello Hello!
Welcome to the blog of Matt Allyn Chapman. I'm an illustrator working out of Lancaster PA, a recent graduate of Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, and I have a passion for the natural world (the woods, forest, mountains, caves, streams & waterways of the like, and all of the life inside them) More than anything this Blog will serve as my meeting place for my sketches, finished pieces, and my thoughts on an estimated chimera of topics. My Illustrationfriday submissions will also be found here! So welcome and i hope you have as much fun looking around as i will Posting.
